Critical reception
Kine A week said “The new robust ‘crooks slip out’ try peopled that have a colorful assortment out of important and arresting letters, that, skilfully manipulated by writer and movie director, allow the flick to tread liquid efficiently. It is simply with the find yourself so it begins to falter, nevertheless slap-upwards finale rescues they in the ‘red’. Excellently staged and you will intelligently dialogued, it’ll have zero great challenge in the living off their very unsightly identity.” [ 8 ]
Monthly Flick Bulletin told you “The film actions at the an easy pace, brand new discussion was advanced and you may characterisations generally active. Cock Powell and Evelyn Keyes head the latest cast expertly, because detective is actually played with significant aplomb because of the that person identity, Lee J. Cobb.” [ nine ]
Richard Brody in the The new Yorker noted “This terse and you will tight movie noir is actually considering the fresh close and you will elite group disputes of your own title reputation, this new violent mastermind (starred by the Knob Powell) at the rear of a sophisticated unlawful local casino. The newest film’s journalist and you may movie director, Robert Rossen, creates a good multidimensional chess game, for mortal limits, anywhere between Johnny, their company (Thomas Gomez), their boss’s spouse (Ellen Received), a beneficial cagey cops inspector (Lee J. Cobb), and an excellent scuffling actress (Evelyn Keyes) whose cousin (Nina Foch) has worked on gambling enterprise and you will old a great corrupt detective (Jim Bannon). The brand new caustically epigrammatic script, brand new cast’s suavely controlled gestures out-of like and danger, and you may Rossen’s thrillingly restrained and you can smartly assertive images (plus his political conscience) make this pugnacious yet , in depth spectacle a low profile antique of your own category.” [ ten ]
Range offered the film kudos, writing, “This can be a smart whodunit, that have attention to scripting, casting and camerawork training they over the average. Photograph has actually actions and you may suspense, and you can certain small touches off jokes to include taste. Expert performances of the Cock Powell, because a gaming domestic overseer, and you will Lee J. Cobb, while the a police inspector, and up the score . Even though the patch observe a common development, brand new characterizations is fresh in addition to performances good enough so you can overbalance. Dialogue try terse and topical, steering clear of the sentimental, phoney touching. Uncommon camera basics show up occasionally to escalate desire and you can briefly arrest the interest. Strong teamplay because of the Robert Rossen, increasing since the movie director-scripter, and you may Milton Holmes, modern copywriter and you will associate manufacturer, including aids in making it a delicate manufacturing.” [ 11 ]
Movie critic Bosley Crowther provided the movie a mixed review, criticizing it to have sluggish pacing, creating, “Nevertheless the sluggishness and you may general confusion of spot for two-thirds of your own motion picture does not make for recognized adventure, together with shallowness of your secret concerning who has undertaking most of the the new eliminating relieves they of any higher suspense. It is generally an issue of viewing Mr. Powell experience their paces stylishly if you find yourself a giant cast of stars and actresses provide him classic service. Evelyn Keyes plays the great nothing lady who brings about the finest in him and you will Ellen Received is the smooth and you may slinky vixen who will get him towards the jams. Thomas Gomez are fatty given that villain and Lee J. Cobb really does an alternative able tour as the a weary police inspector just who in the end closes happening. A great amount of drinking and you can smoking is performed by the worried.” [ twelve ]
Philp French, composing throughout the Observer told you: “This hardly found motion picture noir ‘s the cool, controlled directorial first of leftover-wing copywriter who continued and also make like classics as All of the this new King’s Dudes plus the Hustler .” [ thirteen ]
